Untouchable by K.L. Ramsey
“Em’s craving chocolate cake and she may be in labor. I’m going to need to borrow your SUV and go check on her. I might be awhile, since we may have to head to the hospital, so she can be checked. I’ll drop you at your place first.” He motioned for Carter to follow, as he started to race out Kacey’s door.
“I should hang out here, help Kacey with her car, and maybe we could walk to the store.” Carter had them both whipping around to face him.
“Wait, what?” Kacey wasn’t sure if she liked Carter’s idea, that would mean they had to spend time together, alone. Although that was something that she always dreamed of, the possibility of it actually happening scared the shit out of her.
“Yeah, what? I swear to God, Carter, I don’t have time to make you repeat the bro code about little sisters. You need to keep your hands, and all of your other body parts, away from Kacey, clear?” Sam was eyeing Carter suspiciously, causing Kacey even more panic at the thought of being completely alone with him. There was a bro code? How did she miss them talking about Carter not being allowed to touch her? Did she get a vote in this or was it strictly between the two Neanderthals standing next to her?
“Yeah, yeah. We’ve talked about me not dating or touching or even thinking about your sister for years. I know the whole speech verbatim. But look at her, she’s not little any more, and we aren’t eighteen.” Sam didn’t seem happy about leaving them alone, but he had no choice. He shook his head at Carter and mouthed the words, ‘bro-code’ as he pulled Kacey in for a quick hug. He left, slamming her door on the way out. Suddenly, her little apartment felt even smaller and she was finding it hard to think, or breathe for that matter. She felt a little woozy, and thank goodness Carter seemed to notice. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into his side.
“Whoa, Kace, you okay?” He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the sofa, setting her down as if she were fragile. The man just lifted her up, as if she didn’t eat four donuts yesterday, and carried her across the room, and damn it, she loved every second of it.
“I haven’t had any breakfast yet, I must be hungry.” She liked the way he sat down next to her and pulled her into his body. She willingly climbed into his lap, still a little groggy from her dizzy spell.
“How about you let me make you something to eat and then I’ll take a look at your car.” Carter leaned in to kiss her temple, and the sweet gesture had her even more confused. He had never even looked in her direction, and now she was practically sitting on his lap and he was butterfly kissing her forehead.
“What the hell is going on here, Carter?” She tried to sit up from his hold, but he pulled her back down into his hard body.
“Don’t, Kace. Don’t pretend that you didn’t write a whole damn column about me. Don’t pretend that you don’t want me touching you, holding you, kissing you. I can’t believe you never told me, Kacey. Why?” She shook her head, wanting to deny everything that he just said but knowing that she had no defense—she wrote that column. Honestly, she meant every word that poured out of her last night, every damn sappy, loving word. She would forever think of Carter as the one who might have been, but now he was sitting on her sofa, touching her and kissing her, making her want more from him—so much more. Did he really understand what she wanted? Would he be willing to give her everything that she craved from him, or would he hold true to his ‘bro code’ with her brother?

About Craving author K.L. Ramsey
K.L. Ramsey was born and raised in Maryland. As a child she struggled in school, having to attend speech and reading therapy. Her teacher told her that she would never be a very good reader; that English was just not her thing. She continued to struggle until eleventh grade, when she signed up for a Creative Writing class. Her high school teacher saw her potential and submitted a short story, that K. L. had written for class, to a local literary publication. The story was not only published but won an award for best short story. Knowing that someday she wanted to become a writer, K. L. received her BA in English from Salisbury State University.
K.L. Ramsey currently resides in West Virginia (Go Mountaineers!). She lives with hunky scientist, two now not so little people, and six fur babies. In her spare time, she likes to read romance novels, attend WVU football games and drink wine with girlfriends.
